You are rapidly growing! Your skin is very thin and you can see the blood vessels
clearly underneath. Your scalp hair pattern is developing while fine hair (called
lanugo) covers your body. You are approximately 12-14 cm (3.7 to 4.1 inches) and
weigh about 50 grams (1.75 to 2 ounces).Your taste buds already look like a
mature adult’s and doctors have learned that the amniotic fluid that surrounds it
can smell strongly of curry, cumin, garlic, onion and other essences from my diet.
Your bones continue to harden and retain calcium very rapidly. At this point in the
pregnancy the placenta will begin to take on the job of hormone production to
sustain the pregnancy, which was the job of my ovaries up to this point. Your
eyelids are now firmly shut, and will stay closed until the third trimester.

We had our second appointment today. It went pretty quick and was very routine. I tinkled in a
cup, the nurse weighed me and took my blood pressure, and Dr. Prescott used a
Doppler and found your heart beat… Now that was exciting! We saw your heart
beat last time, but this was the first time we got to hear it. It was wonderful! Daddy
thought it sounded like a train… Dr. Prescott says I am doing well, and so are you!

Tomorrow I’ll be at 14 weeks. The end of the 3rd month, and past the first trimester. So far
my pregnancy with you has been very easy. I only had a week of morning sickness early
in June. I’m not even showing yet. But, I can feel you when I push on my lower stomach. And,
of course, we heard your heartbeat at our last doctor appointment. If it weren’t for that I wouldn’t
really believe I was pregnant. But in just 6 more months I’ll hold you in my arms! I can’t wait!

Your Grandma and Grandpa Johnson gave us your crib yesterday. It was hand made by your Grandma’s
Dad, your Great-Grandpa Toepfer. You will be the first of the 3rd generation to
sleep in it… Well, actually, I think your cousins slept in it too, but not on a
regular basis. We brought it home in our Explorer and detail cleaned it
really good. Now it’s in your bedroom already, done up completely
in Winnie-The-Pooh… I wish it was the size of a standard size
crib. The sheets and bumper guard are too big, but it still
thrills me to have such an heirloom. We are blessed… I still
want the nursery furniture to match though, so we looked
and found a changing table on clearance at Sears that
is stained the same color. Then we bought an unfinished
dresser at Fred Meyers. I plan on putting it together
and staining it to match the rest. I think it will look great!

Love the picture wheel. What a precious story of the crib. It is so sweet to have an heirloom like that.
