Completed for the journalling challenge for July 2008.
What does independence and freedom mean to me? Hard question for one who has never known anything but! I know my Father and both my Grandfathers fought in World Wars for peace, independence and freedom. I remember the 60s when women were fighting for equal rights, independence and freedom. I also just remember when they ‘Pill’ became available and women were free to make a choice about having children.
I don’t think that we are as free as we like to think, if I had total freedom, I could have got on the plane with my comb that has a metal tail, (it was taken out of my luggage).
I know loss of independence after having a knee operation in 2006, I still cannot do some things and I found the loss of independence the worse part of my recuperation.
I suppose freedom to me means I can speak my mind, I can shout from the rooftops that the government is an ### and needs to stop mucking around, build another dam. I can protest if I wish, I am free to vote, free to debate, free to write letters to newspapers, free to make up my own mind about global warming, wars and the state of the world.
I am also free to be in a bad mood if I wish and so are you! Just remember though that so is everyone else in the house you live.
