Martin County Remembers September 11 2001
It was a cloudy day when I left home and by the time I reached the Blake Library in Stuart it was storming. The downpour did not deter the number of people who ventured out to view the 9-11 Photo Exhibit by the Magnum Photographers. Upon entering the exhibit, I was not sure what to expect or what my reaction would be to seeing the first photos. The background is one of the first photos you saw. This is a most stunning photo, the capture of the tower in mid fall. I have seen the video many times, but this photo truly hits with an impact. The photo exhibit was shown in progression of events - from the destruction to the aftermath. The exhibit gave a photo view from the different parts of the city where the photographers were located. The exhibit also included some artifacts used by the firemen, a portion of a steel beam, and a backpack recovered a year later. This backpack belongs to a local Stuart man The firemen told his story of escaping the tower. His office was located in the second tower, when he felt the heat blast from the impact on the first tower. He had been there in 1993 for the 1st bombing, and had not left; but this time he said he was not going to wait. He and a few other members of the office left with him and made it to safety. This group of survivors were only the only ones to make it from their floor, as the second plane impacted at their office. The backpack had been found a year later and was returned to him sealed. He had not opened it until the time of the exhibit. The firemen commented on how it smelled, as it was the same that they encountered while working at ground zero. It is a smell that they will never forget, and memories associated with it. The exhibit was very moving and emotion. We were very fortune to have this exhibit come to our area, as it has been out of New York only two other times. The photographers truly have captured the events as a lasting remembrance.
