While hiking on a trail we found some strange fruit. They had a thick pulpy skin and inside were crunchy seeds in a sweet juice. They turned out to be Passion fruit or in Hawaiian Lilikoi. The fruit is used in drinks, sauces, desserts, and many other foods. The purple Passion fruit is also on island and is used mostly for eating as it is sweeter than the yellow. The Lilikoi vines can grow up to 20 feet a year and must be pruned to make the plant flower. The plants usually flower from April to November, but will sometimes flower year-round. The plants live from four to six years and are usually grown from seed.
