THE JOHN SIGFURD JOHNSON STORY (by Mrs. Isabel Johnson -written 1972)
Mr. and Mrs. J.S. Johnson, with their five sons, George, Loran, Wilson, John and James, came to Lougheed in the fall of 1918.
They lived on a farm of Mrs. Johnson's sister, Mrs. B.J. McDonnell. They left Kesal, North Dakota, U.S.A. in October, driving a
Model T Ford to Provost, Alberta, where they got stuck in the snow. They had to leave their car and take the train to
Lougheed, arriving on October 26. Mr. Johnson went back to Provost in the spring to get the car. The winter of 1918 they
lived in a sod house until the new house was completed. Mr. Johnson farmed until 1928, then became manager of the U.G.C.
Elevator at Lougheed until 1935. Then he went to Alliance to manage the U.G.G. there. In the meantine the sons farmed the
land. Then, in the fall of 1935, he had a sale and moved the family to Alliance.
Their eldest son, George, went back to the states in 1927, settling in Portland, Oregon, where he married and raised a family.
He passed away in October, 1936. The second son, Loran, married Isabel Anderson and settled on a farm east of Lougheed,
where he farmed until he passed away in October, 1950. They had two girls, Evelyn and Lillian. Wilson went to the states in
1935 and John and James followed a few years later. Wilson is now in Lebanon, Oregon; John at Sweet Home, and James in
Portland, Oregon.
In the spring of 1944 Mr. Johnson gave up the Elevator and took a trip to Whitehorse. When he returned in the fall he went
to Provost to manage the Alberta Pacific Elevator, but his health failed and he passed awat at the home of his son, Loran, in
July, 1945. Mrs. J.S. Johnson bought a house in the country and had it moved to Lougheed in 1946. She resided in town until
June, 1960, when she moved to Portland to be near her sons. She passed away in April, 1961.
