Journaling Reads:
After finding this photo of my Grandma I talked to my Mom and my Aunt Hulda to glean a little perspective into the time and the occasions. My Aunt told me that Grandma joined the Rebekahs when she and Grandpa Underhill lived in Yakima (between 1915 and 1922 probably). He was active in IOOF (the Oddfellows) even up to the military head portion. She was Noble Grand (top like president) in those days. She dropped out for some time but joined again when she moved to Centralia Washington and was Noble Grand again while she was there. Aunty Hulda said in those days, the ladies usually wore formals for meetings. They did not wear red or black but light colors because the cancan or saloon girls wore those bright colors to call attention to themselves.
This picture was taken in Uncle Kiehl (Mom’s brother) and Aunty Hulda’s living room. Grandma was living across the street from them on Russell Road.
And isn’t it funny that the Grandma I remember in this picture in the early 1960’s wore rouged cheeks dabbed with fingertips from a small round tin, bright lipstick and sometimes her nails were red as well. I remember her cigarette holder 3 inches long with a cigarette dangling another 2 inches beyond that (or so it seemed in my young eyes).
So fun to find pictures of relatives and so important to do just like you have...document them for future generations. Love your use of Mary's Summer Magic. Love the butterfly border. TFS

I wonder if our relatives ever met at national or regional meetings? The old IOOF hall held our small town library until they built a larger building for the library. The hall is now owned by the Masons. My grand mother often was dressed up, and wore dresses daily. I think they were a much more formal generation and loved to dress! Your grandmothers photo is a good reflection of this! Great job and LO! Loved the journaling and think it is so important that you found out all you could for future generations.
